Integrated Services Digital Network
What is ISDN?
ISDN was developed by ITU-T in 1976.

It is a set of protocols that combines digital telephony and data transport services.

The whole idea is to digitize the telephone network to permit the transmission of audio, video, and text over existing telephone lines.

ISDN Services
The purpose of the ISDN is to provide fully integrated digital services to users.
These services fall into three categories:
Bearer services: means to transfer information (voice, data, video)
Teleservices Supplementary services

Telegraphy (Telex) is the long-distance transmission of written messages without physical transport of letters.
Telex message was a telegram sent by a Telex network, a switched network of teleprinters similar to a telephone network.
Teletex was an ITU-T specification for a text and document communications service that could be provided over telephone lines.
A collect call in the USA and Canada or reverse charge call in the UK and other countries (or calling collect) is a telephone call in which the calling party wants to place a call at the called party's expense.

The ISDN integrates customer services with the IDN.

To receive the maximum benefit from the integrated digital networks, the next step is to replace the analog local loops with digital subscriber loops.

Voice transmissions can be digitized at the source, thereby removing the final need for analog carriers.

It then becomes possible to send data, voice, image, facsimile, and so on over any digital network.
